A little update about SMXR
Hello friends,
I’m making a slight change to this email list. First is inviting my friend and Songs My Ex Ruined co-host Melissa to share her recommendations and picks for stuff you might get into. You’ll see that going forward.
Right off the bat, we’re going to be real with you: we aren’t making enough money on ad revenue to keep this podcast going. We’ve taken some steps, including adding more ads to episodes, doing promotional exchanges with other podcasts and networks, and doing some initial outreach about sponsors — but we don’t have a big enough audience to attract them, frankly.
So this week is our 50th episode. We’ve decided to cut back to two episodes a month for the foreseeable future and, hopefully, we will figure out the finances and marketing side of podcasting (by the way, if any of you are experts and want to offer your advice then please come forward).
In honor of our 50th, we booked a show with Allison Wolfe, who is a legend in music and feminism. She’s best known as the frontwoman of Bratmobile, one of the core riot grrl bands. Bratmobile is reuniting, which they infrequently do, to play a show in NYC this spring, so Allison talked about that and a lot of other fascinating things. And she was the first person to tell us a story of a song that was ruined by mansplaining — appropriately enough.
We’ve also launched a Patreon. Our lowest cost tier at $5 a month gives you access to a monthly playlist curated by us, recommendations, and pet photos. For $10, you get all that plus a monthly AMA episode of the pod and you’re automatically entered into giveaways from our guests of the cool books, albums, and other stuff they’re hawking. And you can send us VoiceNotes with the story of a song an ex ruined for you plus we’ll comment on social posts of your choice by your ex with something like “smdh,” “lol,” or “as if.” Our highest teir, which is $15, gets you all of that and you get to be a guest on an episode and tell us the story of a song an ex ruined for you.
As always, Songs My Ex Ruined is an independently created podcast with an all-woman production team. If you’ve got the means to support us, it would mean the world to us that you do.
And if you don’t care at all, uh….it’s time you give this podcast a listen. It won’t change your life but it might make you laugh. Or cry. Sometimes both at once and who doesn’t need that in an election year.
Love ya, mean it.
